Thinning hair and hair loss can affect your confidence, no matter your age. If you’ve noticed sparse areas along your part line, around your temples, or at the crown, you may be wondering what your options are. At Monaco Hair Extensions Salon in South Tampa, we offer a modern, discreet solution that restores both volume and peace of mind - human hair toppers and hairlines. Designed to blend seamlessly with your natural hair, our toppers provide natural-looking coverage exactly where you need it most.
What is a Hair Topper?
A hair topper is a lightweight, discreet solution designed to conceal thinning hair at the crown, part line, or around the hairline. Unlike wigs or full-head extensions, a topper sits comfortably on top of your head, blending seamlessly with your natural hair.
At Monaco Hair Extensions Salon in South Tampa, we offer premium mesh hair toppers made from 100% human hair for the most natural look and feel. We can install them with pressure-sensitive clips for part-time wear, or we can use a beaded row method for full-time wear. Yes, the same method used for hand tied wefts can be used on our hair toppers, which is great news if you would like to sleep and shower with your topper in place.
Who Can Benefit from a Hair Topper?
If you are experiencing hair loss or thinning at the top of your head, a topper can provide the coverage and volume that extensions alone cannot. Toppers are ideal for women with sparse areas along the part, around the temples, or at the crown. Hair extensions can give you volume on the sides, but a topper will give you added coverage on top, creating a more natural, rounded head shape.
Many women turn to toppers not only for coverage but to restore confidence and enjoy fuller, more balanced hair from every angle.
Will It Look Natural?
The short answer is yes, when applied and styled properly. At Monaco Salon, we custom cut, color, and style your topper to blend seamlessly with your hair. Our toppers are hand-made with Swiss lace and a breathable mesh base to create a lightweight, discreet finish.
Unlike bulky wigs, our toppers enhance your hair without adding unnecessary weight or density, giving you a natural, flattering look that feels as good as it looks.
What Size Topper Do I Need?
We offer two sizes to suit different levels of coverage:
The Petite Topper provides discreet volume along the part line and temple area. Perfect for enhancing bangs and adding fullness where it’s needed most.
The Trend Topper, our most popular, offers full coverage across the top of the head, right up to the hairline. This option gives you maximum volume and blends beautifully with your natural hair.
What Are the Attachment Options?
Toppers can be worn part-time or full-time, depending on your lifestyle.
Clip-In - We use the small, discreet pressure-sensitive clips that come with the topper, making them easy to remove before showering or sleeping. This is a great choice for first-time topper wearers.
Beaded Row - We remove the clips and secure your topper with tiny, color-matched beads. No glue, no tape, and no shaving required. You can sleep, shower, and style your hair with confidence. Krista is one of the first, and one of the few, to offer this technique.
What Is Mesh Integration?
For women with very fine or sparse hair, mesh integration offers added comfort and security. This lightweight barrier sits between your natural hair and the topper, protecting delicate hair and reducing tension.
Mesh integration is becoming increasingly popular in Europe, and at Monaco Salon, we are proud to bring this technique to our Tampa guests.
How Long Does a Hair Topper Last?
The longevity of your topper will depend on the attachment type and the general wear and tear of daily life.
If you choose a full-time beaded attachment, you’ll need to visit the salon every 4 to 8 weeks for maintenance, where we will reposition and tighten your topper as needed. You'll be able to get several months of total wear out of your topper, and the more gentle you are with de-tangling and washing, the longer it will last.
If you opt for a clip-in topper, and remove your topper before bathing and sleeping, there will be less wear and tear and your piece will naturally last longer.

What's the difference between a hair topper and a wig?
«A hair topper is designed to cover just the top of the crown or along the part line to conceal thinning hair or sparse areas. It adds volume and coverage on top but still allows your own hair to show. A wig covers all of your hair, making it a good choice for total hair loss, or for those who want complete coverage or a total style change.
How do you maintain a hair topper?
«Maintenance depends on how your topper is worn:
Clip-in toppers – These are designed for daily wear. You’ll remove them before bed, gently detangle them, and store them on a stand or in a box to keep their shape. Wash only when needed, using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, and always let them air-dry.
Toppers with a beaded attachment method– These are secured 24/7 using the same method as beaded row hair extensions. Your topper will be professionally installed so you don't have to worry if you're "doing it right." If we've installed it for full-time wear, after 8 weeks, your natural hair will have grown quite a bit, so we'll have you in for a maintenance visit. We'll remove and reposition your topper. After another 4 weeks, you'll come back for another short maintenance appointment so that we can tighten it. That's it, a simple in-salon maintenance routine that alternates between repositioning and tightening.
Shampooing: To wash your human hair topper, start by gently detangling it—begin at the ends and work your way up to the base. If you are wearing your topper with clips, remove it. Use a sulfate-free cleansing shampoo with lukewarm water, and always wash in a downward motion without rubbing or scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly, then apply a moisturizing conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends. Rinse well and let your topper air dry on a wig stand to help it keep its shape and stay looking its best.
Can a hair topper be colored or styled?
«Yes, if the topper is high-quality human hair, it can be cut, colored, and heat-styled just like your natural hair. Synthetic toppers, however, have more limitations and may not be safe for heat styling or color changes. Always consult your stylist before making changes.
How long does a hair topper last?
«The lifespan depends on the quality of the topper, how often it’s worn, and how well it’s maintained. With proper care, a human hair topper can last 18-24 months (sometimes longer), while synthetic toppers usually last 4–6 months.
Is a hair topper or wig covered by medical insurance?
«If you're experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition, your health insurance may cover part or all of the cost of your hair topper or wig, or medically speaking, your Cranial Hair Prosthesis. When contacting your insurance provider, it’s important to use the correct terminology. Avoid referring to the unit as a “wig” or “topper,” as those are often considered cosmetic. Instead, ask about coverage for a cranial hair prosthesis or hair replacement unit related to medical hair loss. Every policy is different, so we recommend reaching out to your insurance company directly for details on eligibility and documentation requirements.
Will my hair topper look like a wig?
«If your topper is properly matched to your natural hair, it won't look like a wig or a topper at all. The key to the topper looking natural is the density of the hair piece itself. Hair density refers to the number of individual hair strands present per square inch. Our toppers are designed with low density so that when combined with your own hair, they create a very natural look. It will look like have more of your own hair. You'll definitely get the coverage and comfort you need, in a very believable, natural way. Krista searched high and low to find a comfortable, low density hair topper for her clients with thinning hair and hair loss. Clients are astonished how there's no tightness, no wig look or feel, and how they don't even feel the attachments. Those benefits are all thanks to "low density!"
How much does a hair topper cost?
«The price of a hair topper varies depending on the quality, length, and whether the hair is human hair or synthetic. If the topper is custom colored, trimmed, attached with a beaded row method, or using mesh integration, there is an additional cost.
At our salon, most human hair topper service—including customization—starts around $2,200 which includes the hair piece, custom hair color, the initial installation, and a haircut to blend it in. We’ll provide an exact quote during your consultation.
What is mesh integration?
«Mesh integration is a technique used to create a secure foundation for a topper when there isn’t enough natural hair to anchor the attachments. A fine, breathable mesh is placed over the thinning area, then secured to your existing hair and/or scalp. This mesh becomes the “base” for applying a beaded row topper, ensuring a stable, comfortable fit even when natural hair density is sparse.
