Why Not Just Wear a Wig?
People often suggest to friends with thin hair or hair loss: “Why not just wear a wig?”
It's not that simple. For many clients, a wig feels like hiding, especially if they have some natural hair. What they really want is to feel like themselves again—to look in the mirror and recognize their own hair. That’s exactly what we created for this client.
Topper + Extensions: A Hybrid Approach for Thin, Fragile Hair
Instead of covering her hair completely, we worked with what she already had. A lightweight, breathable hair topper added fullness only where she needed it most, giving extra coverage at the top without the weight of a wig cap.
The topper was secured with tiny beads—no glue, no tape, and no damage to her natural hair. Then, to bring everything into balance, we added weft extensions on the sides for both length and volume.
Seamless, Natural Results with a Topper + Extensions
Once the topper and extensions were in place, we cut and blended everything together. The result? No lines, no bulk—just smooth, natural movement that looks and feels like her own hair. Unlike a wig, this combination solution allows the hair to move naturally and blend seamlessly.
Confidence Restored for Thin, Fragile Hair
For clients with fine or thinning hair, the topper + extensions method is more than just a cosmetic solution—it’s an emotional one. It restores confidence, dignity, and the feeling of being authentically you.

Whatever your personal needs, we will gladly honor them and make sure you feel comfortable. Simply let us know when booking, and we’ll reserve a private space for your appointment. What's the difference between a hair topper and a wig?
«A hair topper is designed to cover just the top of the crown or along the part line to conceal thinning hair or sparse areas. It adds volume and coverage on top but still allows your own hair to show. A wig covers all of your hair, making it a good choice for total hair loss, or for those who want complete coverage or a total style change.
How do you maintain a hair topper?
«Maintenance depends on how your topper is worn:
Clip-in toppers – These are designed for daily wear. You’ll remove them before bed, gently detangle them, and store them on a stand or in a box to keep their shape. Wash only when needed, using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, and always let them air-dry.
Toppers with a beaded attachment method– These are secured 24/7 using the same method as beaded row hair extensions. Your topper will be professionally installed so you don't have to worry if you're "doing it right." If we've installed it for full-time wear, after 8 weeks, your natural hair will have grown quite a bit, so we'll have you in for a maintenance visit. We'll remove and reposition your topper. After another 4 weeks, you'll come back for another short maintenance appointment so that we can tighten it. That's it, a simple in-salon maintenance routine that alternates between repositioning and tightening.
Shampooing: To wash your human hair topper, start by gently detangling it—begin at the ends and work your way up to the base. If you are wearing your topper with clips, remove it. Use a sulfate-free cleansing shampoo with lukewarm water, and always wash in a downward motion without rubbing or scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly, then apply a moisturizing conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends. Rinse well and let your topper air dry on a wig stand to help it keep its shape and stay looking its best.
Can a hair topper be colored or styled?
«Yes, if the topper is high-quality human hair, it can be cut, colored, and heat-styled just like your natural hair. Synthetic toppers, however, have more limitations and may not be safe for heat styling or color changes. Always consult your stylist before making changes.
How long does a hair topper last?
«The lifespan depends on the quality of the topper, how often it’s worn, and how well it’s maintained. With proper care, a human hair topper can last 18-24 months (sometimes longer), while synthetic toppers usually last 4–6 months.
Is a hair topper or wig covered by medical insurance?
«If you're experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition, your health insurance may cover part or all of the cost of your hair topper or wig, or medically speaking, your Cranial Hair Prosthesis. When contacting your insurance provider, it’s important to use the correct terminology. Avoid referring to the unit as a “wig” or “topper,” as those are often considered cosmetic. Instead, ask about coverage for a cranial hair prosthesis or hair replacement unit related to medical hair loss. Every policy is different, so we recommend reaching out to your insurance company directly for details on eligibility and documentation requirements.
Will my hair topper look like a wig?
«If your topper is properly matched to your natural hair, it won't look like a wig or a topper at all. The key to the topper looking natural is the density of the hair piece itself. Hair density refers to the number of individual hair strands present per square inch. Our toppers are designed with low density so that when combined with your own hair, they create a very natural look. It will look like have more of your own hair. You'll definitely get the coverage and comfort you need, in a very believable, natural way. Krista searched high and low to find a comfortable, low density hair topper for her clients with thinning hair and hair loss. Clients are astonished how there's no tightness, no wig look or feel, and how they don't even feel the attachments. Those benefits are all thanks to "low density!"
How much does a hair topper cost?
«The price of a hair topper varies depending on the quality, length, and whether the hair is human hair or synthetic. If the topper is custom colored, trimmed, attached with a beaded row method, or using mesh integration, there is an additional cost.
At our salon, most human hair topper service—including customization—starts around $2,200 which includes the hair piece, custom hair color, the initial installation, and a haircut to blend it in. We’ll provide an exact quote during your consultation.
What is mesh integration?
«Mesh integration is a technique used to create a secure foundation for a topper when there isn’t enough natural hair to anchor the attachments. A fine, breathable mesh is placed over the thinning area, then secured to your existing hair and/or scalp. This mesh becomes the “base” for applying a beaded row topper, ensuring a stable, comfortable fit even when natural hair density is sparse.
Will hair extensions work on short hair?
«If you have short hair, or hair with shorter layers, we can apply hair extensions as long as your hair is at least 3-4 inches long. Depending on your current style, we may recommend one type of hair extensions over another. We recommend starting with a free hair extensions consultation. https://www.monacosalon.com/booking

Do you offer NBR extensions?
«We get a lot of questions about NBR weft extensions. First, let's clarify because the method and the brand go by the same name. We do not offer the NBR brand of extensions. We do offer the NBR method (Natural Beaded Row) for our genius wefts. Learn more on our blog about the differences between natural beaded row extensions and Monaco wefts.
How much do hair extensions cost?
«We get a lot of call with this very question, and it's impossible to give an exact answer over the phone. The cost of hair extensions depends on many factors, including the type of hair we use, the size and density of the wefts, the length, and how much hair we need to create your look.
Application time also impacts the cost of your hair extensions. The cost of hair extensions can range from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. We can propose different ways to work within your budget, depending on the look you are trying to achieve. You may not need a full head of extensions, and we can add volume and length where you need it.

Do you re-install hair extensions that have been worn already?
«Whether or not we can re-install hair will depend on a few factors, as our priority is always to protect the integrity of your hair and provide you with a high quality service. Generally speaking, we can re-install hair from any company as long as it is in good condition, 100% human hair, and appropriate for the methods we use.
Here are some difference scenarios to clarify our policy on reinstalling hair.
If your hair was installed at Monaco Salon and we're doing a maintenance appointment on your hand-tied wefts, or hair topper, YES we reuse and re-install the hair as often as we can over the life expectancy of the hair. We will let you know when your hair is getting close to the point where it needs to be replaced.
Suppose you took a break from your extensions and you want to bring us hair purchased at Monaco Salon, and within one of our installation methods, YES we can reinstall the hair provided that it is still in good shape.
What if you come to us for maintenance or move up for extensions that were purchased and installed somewhere else, will we reinstall the hair? If the hair is within one of our installation methods and within one of the specific brands we work with (Great Lengths, Bellami, Hair Dreams etc) YES we can reinstall the hair provided that it is still in good shape.
Will we install hair you purchased elsewhere and have worn, and it is within one of our installation methods and within one of the specific brands we work with (Great Lengths, Bellami, and Hair dreams), YES we can reinstall the hair provided that it is still in good shape
Will we re-install keratin bond extensions? NO, once removed, keratin bond hair cannot be reapplied, regardless of where you purchased them or which brand they are. Keratin bond extensions are a one time use item and can not be reinstalled once removed.
Can you install extensions that I purchased somewhere else?
«Generally speaking, we can install hair from any company as long as it is in good condition, 100% human hair, and appropriate for the application methods we use. No matter where you purchased the hair, even if already worn, we can re-install it provided that the hair meets that criteria.
Can you custom color hair extensions that I purchased somewhere else?
«We understand that some guests already own hair extensions and may want us to adjust the color. While we don’t mind installing extensions you’ve purchased elsewhere, we will not color, dye, or lighten any extensions not purchased directly through Monaco Salon—even if they are human hair or a brand we regularly use.
Here’s why:
- Unknown quality cannot be guaranteed. Not all hair labeled “100% human” is the same quality. Some extensions are processed in ways that make them unpredictable when exposed to color. Coloring them can lead to breakage, uneven tones, or permanent damage, and we can't be responsible for that.
- Chemical history is unknown. If we didn’t source the hair, we can’t know how it was previously processed (bleached, tinted, or chemically treated). Even small differences in processing can affect how the hair reacts to color.
- Protecting your investment. Coloring extensions is not like coloring natural hair—it’s more delicate and far less forgiving. By only coloring hair we’ve supplied, we protect you from spending money on extensions that might be ruined in the process.
Warranty Policy Reminder:
If you purchase extensions and have them installed at Monaco Salon, only our stylists should cut or color those extensions. If another salon alters them in any way (cutting, dyeing, or lightening), any remaining Monaco Salon warranty on the hair is voided.
